Introduction
Wood trim is like a picture frame. It adds the highlight that makes a home look special. Choose trim woods to accent the rooms in your home--it's a beautiful way to create charm and atmosphere. You can decorate with wood accessories such as corner casing, blocks and base blocks, wainscoting, plate rails, fireplace mantels and faces. We'll be more than happy to share decorating ideas in using trim to make your home more distinctive.
Baseboards are designed to the size of the room and the width of the casing chosen. Typical 8' high rooms would have baseboards 4 to 5 1/2" high. As the ceiling height increases, the height of the baseboard increases. Likewise, the baseboard is usually about l" to 3" higher than the casing, as a minimum. As the casing width increases, so does the relative width of the baseboard. Typically, for a five- inch-wide casing the baseboard is 8" to 10" high, as a minimum.
Where the baseboard exceeds 6" in height, it is commonly made by combining two pieces of wood, joining them in a tongue-and-groove fashion or overlapping one on top of the other. This is due mainly to the availability of long wide lumber that will not twist. Where wood baseboards are installed with wood flooring or ceramic flooring, typically a shoe mould must be placed at the bottom of the baseboard.
A very attractive decorating feature is to use an inside and outside plinth block at corners. This is typical of the historic homes of the last century. The cost of the blocks is usually more than offset by the time saved by the carpenter installing the baseboard.
The casing around doors and windows is the most significant trim detail in the home. It is what the eye sees at every door frame. The casing gives dimension to each arch in the home. Typically a casing of 2 3/4" or wider is used.
Casing details come in a wide variety of profiles. We have more than 100 to choose from. They can be combined with back bands to give more definition, or used with casing corner and/or base blocks. Transom details can also be an attractive alternative. Transoms can include the use of a profile such as SP27-5.0 or a combination of flat dressed lumber, panel moulds and/or crown moulds. The casing used around the window is often the same as that used around a door.
Doorstop details are designed to have some of the same characteristics as the casing, but in a smaller profile. Some doorstop profiles are used in other applications, including wall panel moulds, baseboard shoe moulds, etc. Their use illustrates the versatility that any profile may have.
Panel moulds are designed to be used to highlight a detail on a wall or door. Their uses are wide. They can be combined with veneered plywood, solid lumber or used on their own to create interesting wainscoting designs, accentuate a wall, or define a border such as in combination with wallpaper. We have more than 60 designs to choose from.
The crown mould is the one trim used that shows the most. Its view is not obstructed by furniture or other room decorations. The use of a crown mould ties the walls and ceiling together. It will create an illusion of a higher ceiling by rounding the corner upwards. The effect of the use of a crown mould, even in the smallest of rooms such as a small bathroom, is dramatic.
We manufacture at least 35 different crown moulds. But that number does not limit the combinations that are available. Crown moulds can be combined with a wide range of other wood profiles, including casings, panel moulds, dressed lumber, etc. to enhance the effect of the crown mould.
We are constantly being asked for new designs by architects, designers and customers. Although we try to keep our information current, please ask if we have anything close to what you may want or need. If we do not have a profile that suits your requirements, we can grind knives in house to match whatever you may require. We also offer a limited edition service, where we will grind a custom profile to your specifications, run your product and afterwards give you the knives so that no-one else has your exact profile.
Included amongst other custom profiles are such items as beams, plate rails, bar rails, hand rails, custom industrial profiles, style and rail wainscoting, wood flooring, ship lap siding, and many more.
